Young leaders who shine at the global level — Bijar Aziz

Bijar Aziz is a fifth-year medical student studying at Hawler Medical University. He is currently the vice curator at Global Shapers Community- Erbil Hub for 2019-2020.

During his time at high school and subsequently at college, Bijar has enjoyed great success in his extracurricular activities. He has participated in many national and international science and technology competitions and has won several awards.

Bijar’s allelopathy project, designed to serve his community, won first place in the Iraqi National Project Olympiad in January 2012. Bijar has also shown impeccable command of a broad array of subjects. He won a bronze medal and third place among 67 countries in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad (ISWEEEP) which was held in Houston, Texas USA in May 2012.

At the age of only 16, he gave an outstanding speech at the TEDx Erbil 2012 Conference, and was an excellent way for him to share his allelopathy project idea with the world.

Bijar successfully completed high school, finishing among the top 3% in his school, and earned a place at the College of Medicine, Hawler Medical University. While in his first year of college, he started volunteering for the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA-Kurdistan) – a startup to develop public health awareness. In his four years working for this federation, he has led projects such as the World Health Day Festival and World Diabetes Day.

In 2016, Bijar joined the Erbil Hub of the Global Shapers Community, an initiative launched by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Under the Global Shapers’ Erbil hub, he has eagerly put his efforts into the Hawler Cancer Support Center which is one of the first centers in Kurdistan for social and psychological support for cancer patients.

Bijar gave an outstanding speech at the TEDx Erbil 2012 Conference at the age of only 16.

Bijar attended the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting for Public Health in Beirut, Lebanon in February 2017. His participation to the event was a great opportunity for him to develop international experience.  

In July 2018, he was selected to take part in the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP) for undergraduate students. This is a four-week, fully funded leadership training program for talented and dedicated students from all over Iraq.
