Akre is located 100 km. east of Duhok province. Built on the slope of a mountain, the ancient city of Akre is distinguished itself with its old houses constructed of yellow-brown stones. The city retains a traditional architectural style.
Archeologists have only begun to scratch the surface of Akre’s treasures. There are hundreds of archeological sites in Akre. The city is well-known for the largest Newroz celebration in Iraqi Kurdistan. Considering its long history and rich heritage, the city has the potential to become a major cultural tourism destination.
